Recent Investigations into the Later Acheulean of Makapansgat Region, Northern Province, South Africa
This collection of papers on the analysis and interpretation of lithic assemblages steers away from traditional typologies to present new ideas and approaches to studying assemblages from various periods and parts of the world, although inevitably with a European and Palaeolithic bent.
The sixteen papers include interpretations of variability in assemblages, discussions of technology, procurement and mobility, as well as the analysis of aspects such as refitting, recycling, use-wear and dating. Case studies are taken from South Africa, Lebanon, Poland, Turkey, Britain, the Netherlands, North America and Egypt. The papers were originally given at a conference held at the Institute of Archaeology in London in 1998
