Iconografía, lugares y relaciones sociales: reflexiones en torno a las estelas y estatuas-menhir atribuidas a la Edad del Bronce en la Península Ibérica
This book chapter reflects on the broad geographical distribution of some of the iconographic conventions displayed by Bronze Age stelae and statue-menhirs on the Iberian Peninsula and reviews varied interpretations that have been put forward by researchers until now, which highlight the role of elitist individuals in the emergence and spread of these iconographies during the Bronze Age. By considering the broader archaeological record (metallic objects recorded in these regions) I bring into question the dregree of control and power that is usually attributed to these individuals by researchers. I crosscut these considerations with the information provided by some of the places in which stelae and statue-menhirs were located, which provide sequences of long-term, recurrent ritual use. I go on to suggest the necessity of considering the role of communal practices and values in the production of the archaeological and iconographic record of stelae and statue-menhirs as we encounter it today, meaning that these monuments may have played a relevant role as mechanisms of social reproduction at a local scale.
