Neue Ausbildungsformen – andere Werdegänge. Ausbildungs- und Berufsverläufe von Absolventinnen und Absolventen der Graduiertenkollegs der DFG
The 2009 study entitled “New Modes of Training – Different Careers?” examines the effects of funding provided by the DFG Research Training Groups on the conditions experienced by doctoral researchers and on their careers, and compares these to traditional doctoral processes in Germany.

Over the past few years, structured doctoral programmes have become established in both Germany and abroad. For 20 years now, the DFG has been using its Research Training Groups to fund doctoral projects characterised by intensive mentoring and integration into excellent research programmes. The study “New Modes of Training – Different Careers?”, which has been carried out by Jürgen Enders and Andrea Kottmann from the “Center for Higher Education Policy Studies” (CHEPS) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, evaluates doctoral researchers’ careers before, during, and after achieving their doctorates. In addition to their career development, the study also focuses on the environments in which the researchers’ doctorates were achieved, including the level of socialisation within their fields, mentoring conditions, and changes in educational methods over time.

The report uses survey data as a basis for comparing the careers of the doctoral researchers, differentiated by field and year group. In doing so, progressive earnings analyses are used, allowing the researchers to be categorised according to typical career path models. The study also examines the flexibilisation of highly qualified graduates’ career paths, the effects of an increased number of available doctoral researchers on the labour market, and the proximity of qualified candidates to academic institutions.
