Dreaming past and future: nostalgia and postcolonial memory in Baz Luhrmann's 'Australia'
Dreaming past and future: nostalgia and postcolonial memory in Baz Luhrmann's 'Australia'
An examination of the role of nostalgia in the production and reception of Baz Luhrmann's historical epic 'Australia'. Key concepts such as 'nostalgia for the periphery', 'reflective' and 'restorative' nostalgia are used to unpick the complex operations of Luhrmann's use of postcolonial memory to reinvent his country's past and future. The contribution of DVD, the Internet and the global audiovisual landscape to his project are also discussed. The chapter challenges some of the approaches to memory and nostalgia in moving image studies.
