'Fullye bente to fighte oute the matter': reconsidering Cornwall's role in the Western Rebellion of 1549
The Western Rebellion of 1549 has been much studied and is apparently familiar and soundly understood. But, while scholars have spent a great deal of time considering the causes of the insurrection, they have tended to take the course of events somewhat for granted, and Frances Rose-Troup's massive, 520 page study of the revolt, first published a century ago, continues to be regarded as providing the standard narrative. This article draws on new evidence which has surfaced since Rose-Troup's day - some of it unveiled here for the first time - while reconsidering the material which she used, in order to provide some fresh perspectives on the rebellion, and particularly on its Cornish dimension.
