A multitasking template: [2]Rotaxanes have been synthesized with the help of a palladium active-metal template, which acts as both a template for threading and a catalyst for covalent-bond formation (see scheme). The synthesis is high yielding, operates under mild conditions, and is catalytic in palladium.
