Erosion and deposition rates in estuaries – the saltpans area of Aveiro Lagoon, Portugal
Erosion and deposition rates in estuaries – the saltpans area of Aveiro Lagoon, Portugal
The saltpans play an important role in the maintenance of the natural functions of the salt marshes area in the Aveiro Lagoon. The abandon and the conservation difficulties of the saltpans represent important impacts on the hydrodynamics and morphology of that area of the lagoon. It is important to understand the influence and the interaction of the hydrodynamic forces on the sediments dynamics. The objective of the present work is to estimate the sediment transport rates in the saltpans area of Aveiro Lagoon, for the present scenario bathymetry and considering the scenario of continuous saltpans walls degradation and consequent saltpans inundation. The evaluation of the sediment transport in the saltpans area in the Aveiro Lagoon, allowed the determination of erosion and deposition tendencies. The sediment transport rates were estimated by the application of empirical formulations for cohesive sediments, considering the hydrodynamic conditions given in 9 different locations (stations) of the saltpans, obtained by simulations in a 2DH hydrodynamic numerical model, calibrated to the lagoon. The study reveals that deposition is the main mechanism and only in some stations, during some periods, erosion occurs. Comparatively with the actual situation, the saltpans inundation leads to the increase of the erosion fluxes and the decrease of deposition rates. The results contribute to a major knowledge of the morphodynamic behavior of the lagoon and to the understanding of the impacts of saltpans disappearance. This will help to provide an improved management and the development of conservation and maintenance measures to the saltpans.
