Geosynthetics production and their application in geothecnical works have had a huge development all over the world, as these materials exhibit several advantages that justify their acceptance when compared with the traditional ones. However, there is still a long way to go in what concerns the theoretical and experimental knowledge of geosynthetics behaviour. In fact, the use of empirical and semi-empirical methods in the design of structures with geosynthetics is usual. Therefore, the experimental approach of these problems is fundamental, on the one hand, to support the design methods, and, on the other, to enable the development of testing methodologies in order to define the mechanical characteristics of geosynthetics when embedded in soil.

The pull out test is one of the tests used to characterise the mechanism between soil and reinforcement. Its standardisation is being achieved in Europe and there are even topics for the testing proceedings. Nevertheless, there are some questions that provoke different opinions among the members of the scientific community. The analysis of some of these questions, namely the influence of the soil granulometry and the geosynthetic struture, is the aim of this thesis.

To achieve this objective, first geosynthetics are described with reference to their characteristics, functions and possible applications. Secondly, soil-reinforcement techniques are referred, with special attention to soil-reinforcement with geosynthetics and to the importance of soil-geosynthetic interaction on it. A theoretical study of soil-geosynthetics interaction and the analysis of the experimental methods used for its quantification are then presented. Next, the option for the pull out test is justified and the most important test proceedings described in the European standard in preparation are referred. The apparatus and the materials used are also presented, as well as the test proceedings used to achieve our goal. The reference test is defined and the influence of factors such as the soil granulometry, the geosynthetics structure and resistance, the normal stress and the presence of the transversal elements in geogrids is analysed. Finally, the main conclusions resulting from the experimental analysis are presented and some avenues for further research are indicated.
