Forming and shaping creative design teams in an engineering education context

Forming and shaping creative design teams in an engineering education context
Forming and shaping creative design teams in an engineering education context
The act of forming engineering design teams to tackle real-world problems is an age-old issue and one that has been
discussed many times in the literature. However, the central problem of who works best with whom and what type
of personality is best to lead such a team is not well understood and not well implemented in business or academic
institutions. This paper seeks to present some new ideas and concepts which are realizable within an engineering
educational context to improve team working and inter-personal skills, as well as provide successful outcomes. This paper focuses on the discipline of engineering design through Design, Make and Test (DMT) using the Arduino
platform, rather than design theorizing. A new module, developed for the 2013-14 academic year at the University
of Southampton, and now in its second run, seeks to implement this philosophy and change the status quo in
Engineering Design Education.
