Decision making and supervision for third year student midwives

Decision making and supervision for third year student midwives
Decision making and supervision for third year student midwives
Developing autonomous practice for third-year student midwives provides educators and supervisors of midwives with the opportunity to devise innovative learning and teaching strategies. A Decision Making Week activity was devised concerning decision-making tools, theory and their application to clinical experiences, risk management and clinical governance. Students undertook record-keeping audits to critique decision making. This was linked to an existing drop-in supervisor of midwives (SOM) surgery. It is anticipated that students will present key findings to their clinical colleagues as a means of sharing knowledge and developing good practice. By using audit tools as a means for reflection and education, it is hoped that midwives can gain credibility for their decision-making processes and the documentation of the decision-making audit trail. By doing so, it may encourage greater involvement and partnership-working between midwives and clients in planning care
