The laws of the Torah include a clear and unambiguous prohibition of intermarriage between the followers of Moses and the other peoples of the promised land: Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizites, Hivites, and Jebusites (Deut 7:1–4). There must be no relationship, no “covenant” with them. Prefacing a sequence of prohibitions, culminating in the forbidding of intermarriage, the law enjoins only one positive command with respect to the treatment of these peoples: to exterminate them.
