Developing trained volunteer mealtime assistants to help older people in hospital: The Southampton Mealtime Assistance Study
Poor nutrition is common among older inpatients and providing enough help to eat and drink is challenging for time - pressured nurses. This study compared the use of trained volunteer mealtime assistants with usual care on female Medicine for Older People wards. Data from interviews and focus groups with patients, relatives,
nurses and volunteers confirmed that volunteers improved the quality of mealtime care. Details of the volunteer training, roles and activity are provided.
