Growing up in 'Catholic Europe': how to dress, socialise and date in 1950s and 1960s Italy
Growing up in 'Catholic Europe': how to dress, socialise and date in 1950s and 1960s Italy
This article uses the advice column of Italy’s best-selling Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana as a way of exploring how individual Italians growing up in the 1950s experienced the dramatic social changes of those years, and negotiated the conflicting values and messages they received from Church and family on the one hand and from magazines, films and television on the other hand. Placing the Italian experience in a wider European context and comparing it particularly with other predominantly Catholic societies, the article inquires as to how an examination of Italy adds to our broader understanding of social change and economic boom in 1950s Europe.

Abstract
This article uses the advice column of Italy’s best-selling Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana as a way of exploring how individual Italians growing up in the 1950s experienced the dramatic social changes of those years, and negotiated the conflicting values and messages they received from Church and family on the one hand and from magazines, films and television on the other hand. Placing the Italian experience in a wider European context and comparing it particularly with other predominantly Catholic societies, the article inquires as to how an examination of Italy adds to our broader understanding of social change and economic boom in 1950s Europe.
