Abstract

Chalcogenide (GeTe4) waveguides were designed and fabricated on silicon with an isolation layer. Numerical modelling was performed to find the thickness of the isolation layer required for negligible loss into the high refractive index silicon substrate, as a function of wavelength for CaF2, Ta2O5 and ZnSe isolation layers deposited on silicon. The fabricated waveguides were tested for waveguiding in both the mid- and long-wave band of the mid-infrared spectrum.
