Strengthening cast iron using fibre reinforced composites
Strengthening cast iron using fibre reinforced composites
This paper deals with the strengthening of large cast iron struts using carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite. It describes the location of the struts in a vent shaft on the London Underground and examines the problems of reinforcing cast iron with conventional materials. A programme of tests on scaled down struts to prove the benefits of composite strengthening is considered in detail together with a description of the in-situ strengthening project.

Abstract
This paper deals with the strengthening of large cast iron struts using carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite. It describes the location of the struts in a vent shaft on the London Underground and examines the problems of reinforcing cast iron with conventional materials. A programme of tests on scaled down struts to prove the benefits of composite strengthening is considered in detail together with a description of the in-situ strengthening project.
