Late Holocene tectonic land-level changes and tsunamis at Mitla lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico

Late Holocene tectonic land-level changes and tsunamis at Mitla lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico
Late Holocene tectonic land-level changes and tsunamis at Mitla lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico
Sedimentological, stratigraphic and geochemical data record abrupt elevation changes, coastal subsidence and changes in salinity of Mitla lagoon that can be associated with a tsunami in about 3400-3500 AP. The observations are supported by data microfossils (pollen, diatoms and phytoliths) from other studies on the coast of Guerrero. Stratigraphy data indicate a sedimentation rate of approximately 1 mm / year. Registration sea level short term from 1952 tide gauge data are compared with the long-term record (the sedimentary record, c. 3500 yr BP) of the coseismic deformation expected on the coast. The recent large earthquakes in the central Mexican subduction broke an area of ??limited width of approximately ~ 60 km, but some prehistoric earthquakes could break the interface coupling full plates to the trench, thus generating significant coastal subsidence and probably a large tsunami.
