Strategic human resource management: enablers and challenges of pursuing the CSR agenda
Strategic human resource management: enablers and challenges of pursuing the CSR agenda
This paper provides a relevant and timely investigation into the strategic role of Human Resource Management (HRM) in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We argue that HRM can potentially take on a critical and significant role as a strategic partner in pursuing and implementing the CSR agenda. Following a comprehensive review of relevant literatures, our paper presents an empirical analysis of four organizations operating in Lebanon to examine the role of HRM in CSR via a value chain model. The findings reveal significant variation in the roles that HRM is undertaking with regard to CSR; spanning from a purely transactional and retracted role to a more transformational, strategic and proactive role. In conclusion,we point out the main enablers and challenges facing HRM in fulfilling the CSR agenda, together with guidance and recommendations for HR managers wishing to contribute to the success of the CSR agenda within their organization
