Hledání nového člověka ve Francii 1918-1939
The concept of a 'new man' circulated widely in interwar French political discourse. The purpose of the chapter is to demonstrate how and why it was seized upon in this period, by a range of actors. I explore how far these interwar actors themselves were conscious of earlier incarnations of the ‘new man’, not least the visions that proliferated during the era of the French Revolution, when the figure was evoked in order to signal a fundamental rupture in humanity brought about by revolutionary change. The bulk of the chapter locates the 'new man' in the range of political, social, scientific and cultural thought in which the figure was deployed, so that we can recover the diversity of the meanings attached to this figure in the interwar period.

Abstract
