Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy in extremely premature neonates

Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy in extremely premature neonates
Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy in extremely premature neonates

Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy is a rare complication in the neonatal period. We report 3 cases in extremely premature infants where early flexible bronchoscopy enabled early diagnosis and treatment. As the association of preterm delivery with bilateral vocal cord palsy has not been described elsewhere, this case series discusses this novel association, the safety of the ultra-thin 2.2-mm bronchoscope used for diagnosis, and the early consideration of tracheostomy.

Abstract

Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy is a rare complication in the neonatal period. We report 3 cases in extremely premature infants where early flexible bronchoscopy enabled early diagnosis and treatment. As the association of preterm delivery with bilateral vocal cord palsy has not been described elsewhere, this case series discusses this novel association, the safety of the ultra-thin 2.2-mm bronchoscope used for diagnosis, and the early consideration of tracheostomy.
