Cyclic rating of wind farm cable connections

Cyclic rating of wind farm cable connections
Cyclic rating of wind farm cable connections
Cable circuits connecting wind farms to the grid are subject to highly variable loading. The sizing of such cables according to conventional continuous rating methods, for example IEC 60287, can lead to some conservatism. Traditional daily Loss Load Factors (LLF) are also unsuitable for use with these circuits, as unlike demand driven circuits there is no discernible daily load cycle. This paper uses electrical and thermal data from operational wind farm circuits to propose an alternative cyclic rating method for sizing such circuits.

Abstract

Cable circuits connecting wind farms to the grid are subject to highly variable loading. The sizing of such cables according to conventional continuous rating methods, for example IEC 60287, can lead to some conservatism. Traditional daily Loss Load Factors (LLF) are also unsuitable for use with these circuits, as unlike demand driven circuits there is no discernible daily load cycle. This paper uses electrical and thermal data from operational wind farm circuits to propose an alternative cyclic rating method for sizing such circuits.
