Where shall we draw the line?: Conservatism, privacy and digital modernity
Privacy has almost exclusively been framed as a conflict within liberalism, where freedom from interference and surveillance is pitted against freedom of speech and rights to information. This paper argues that an alternative frame, seeing privacy as a key strand of modernity, and as threatened by digital modernity, is possible, and suggests the outline of an alternative defence of privacy, from the point of view of the conservative ideology.

Abstract

Privacy has almost exclusively been framed as a conflict within liberalism, where freedom from interference and surveillance is pitted against freedom of speech and rights to information. This paper argues that an alternative frame, seeing privacy as a key strand of modernity, and as threatened by digital modernity, is possible, and suggests the outline of an alternative defence of privacy, from the point of view of the conservative ideology.
