The Effect of Steady Flow Distortion on Acoustic Mode Propagation in a Straight Annular Duct

The Effect of Steady Flow Distortion on Acoustic Mode Propagation in a Straight Annular Duct
The Effect of Steady Flow Distortion on Acoustic Mode Propagation in a Straight Annular Duct
Steady flow distortion in turbofan intakes results from non-axisymmetric nacelle geometry and non-zero flow incidence. It may have a significant effect on the propagation and attenuation of acoustic modes generated by the fan propagating through a lined intake. In order to study this effect, the propagation of a single incident mode of the azimuthal order m through a circumferentially distorted axial mean flow in a uniform, lined annular duct has been calculated by using an ACTRAN TM model and compared to results obtained by an eigenmode approach to validate both methods.

Abstract

Steady flow distortion in turbofan intakes results from non-axisymmetric nacelle geometry and non-zero flow incidence. It may have a significant effect on the propagation and attenuation of acoustic modes generated by the fan propagating through a lined intake. In order to study this effect, the propagation of a single incident mode of the azimuthal order m through a circumferentially distorted axial mean flow in a uniform, lined annular duct has been calculated by using an ACTRAN TM model and compared to results obtained by an eigenmode approach to validate both methods.
