Moving forward with improved food labelling for consumers with allergies
Allergen labelling for foods continues to be an active issue for the UK government despite the current distractions.1 Representatives from the allergy patient organizations and British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (including myself) met the UK Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, at the end of November. Also present were officials from the UK Food Standards Agency and representatives from the UK food industry. The meeting was very constructive with lots of common ground. Our understanding is that the government will run an consultation exercise in early 2019 with a view of bringing in improved allergen labelling for foods later in 2019. Let us hope that BREXIT politics do not get in the way of this plan.
