Charity in the city:: funding the relief of maimed soldiers in post-Restoration Bristol
Bristol was one of the largest cities in seventeenth-century England and was hotly contested during the Civil Wars. Unfortunately, few details survive about the payments which were made to maimed soldiers and war widows in Bristol after the fighting came to an end. What does survive, however, is a large amount of data relating to how money was collected from the city's inhabitants after 1660 in order to fund the pensions and gratuities of local soldiers and widows. As Mark Stoyle explains, this data provides an intriguing insight into the neglected subject of how the county pension scheme operated in provincial cities during the post-Restoration period.
