Propagation losses in fibers and waveguides

In view of the very small propagation losses for light guided via high-purity optical fibers drawn from highly transparent glasses with linear attenuation coefficients below 10−4 – 10−5 cm−1 , one could think of the necessity to develop extremely sensitive measurement procedures detecting internal losses in such fibers.

Abstract

In view of the very small propagation losses for light guided via high-purity optical fibers drawn from highly transparent glasses with linear attenuation coefficients below 10−4 – 10−5 cm−1 , one could think of the necessity to develop extremely sensitive measurement procedures detecting internal losses in such fibers.
