These figures are plotted using Origin 2017. The figures are as follows: Fig. 2(a) Measured average-power gain against launched pump peak power. Fig. 2(b) Incident pump (red curve), incident signal (black) and transmitted signal (yellow) pulses at 15 dB Raman gain. The amplitudes of the traces have been scaled for visibility. Fig. 2(c) Optical spectra of amplified signal with a 1 nm resolution. Fig. 3(a) Modal content of output signal at 0 dB (black bars) and 15 dB gain (red bars). Power normalized to the total power in all listed modes (from l=-4 to +4). Fig. 3(b) Mode purity versus average power gain, calculated by dividing the power in the primary mode over the sum of power in l=-4 to +4.
