Key principles for reuse

Key principles for reuse
Key principles for reuse
The ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ slogan has become a well-recognised symbol for waste reduction and prevention. With emerging concepts such as the circular economy and sustainable development gaining more attention, a large-scale change in waste management practices is needed. Reuse is a feasible option to replace recycling where appropriate as it is a method of extending the use of resources. The key question for waste management strategists and policy-makers is whether widespread reuse-related activities are temporarily “in fashion” or whether they are likely to endure. This paper defines key terms relating to reuse; identifies methods that enable reuse; outlines the benefits of, and barriers to, reuse; and critically discusses the current drivers and impetus for reuse.
