READ ME File For 'Study of Microstructure Alterations in annealed AISI 52100 steel processed using HPT' Dataset DOI: 10.5258/SOTON/D0959 ReadMe Author: LUIS VICENTE WILCHES PENA, University of Southampton This dataset supports the thesis entitled 'Microstructural Alterations During HPT Tests on Annealed 52100 Bearing Steel' AWARDED BY: University of Southampton, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences DATE OF AWARD: 23/07/2019 DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA Several sample discs made of annealed AISI 52100 were processed using a High-Pressure Torsion tests. Samples were cut in axial and circumferential sections to identify the microstructural changes generated under severe plastic deformation conditions. An extensive LOM exploration revealed some structures similar to White Etching Areas (WEAs) observed in failed bearings affected by White Structure Flaking. These White Structures (WES) were characterised using advanced SEM techniques, such as EBSD and EDX. The equipment used was a JEOL JSM-7000F with SEI/BSI detectors and a Smart Insight / TEAM™ EBSD Analysis System (Smart Insight System from Ametek). Auto Phase (AP), Kernel Average (KAM), Image Quality (IQ) and Inverse Pole Figure (IPF) maps were obtained from the EBSD analysis, whilst chemical distribution maps to C, S, Al, Fe, Cr and Mn were made. All these maps were reported as .jpg and .tif files. The images were classified in five groups according to the type and position of the WES and the HPT parameters used to each case (Groups 02 to 07). In addition, two more image groups were created to include EBSD and EDX results from AISI 52100 steel as received and after conduct an annealed heat treatment (groups 00 and 01). All groups were zipped to be saved on Pure, there are not necessary any particular software to unzip and visualize the images.
