Rodowick. ‘Overlay’ focused on the history of ‘The Mecca’ apartment building, built in 1892 and demolished sixty years later as part of the expansion of the Illinois Institute of Design under the plan of Mies van der Rohe, whose Crown Hall building now occupies the Mecca’s former site. In the years following the Second World War, centers of vibrant African-American culture were effaced by the development programs of the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
