The 1947 Partition violence: Characteristics and interpretations
The 1947 Partition violence: Characteristics and interpretations
The chapter argues that the partition-related violence differed from 'traditional' communal violence in its intensity and motivation. It discusses whether the violence can be understood as 'genocide' or 'ethnic cleansing.' It examines the array of public/political motivations and personal opportunistic characteristics. It maintains that in conditions in which perpetrators perceived impunity for undertaking acts of violence, personal and political motivations reinforced each other and help explain the intensity of the violence.
