'Crowd-composition' is "the practice of outsourcing a creative task to a crowd, leading to a new, musical composition that is assembled and shaped by collective input". As part of the portfolio component of this doctoral project, four original 'crowd-composition' works were designed and performed. These were: 'CrowdComp', 'HyperCello', 'It Wasn't All Yellow' and 'ElectroQuiz'. Surveys were distributed to the participants of these works in order to assess the quality and value of various components, comprehension, and engagement. The resulting data, presented in this dataset, was used as the basis for evaluation in the aforementioned doctoral project. Relationship between files: Each file presents the survey data from individual works that were surveyed over the course of the doctoral project. These are numbered chronologically. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: This dataset is accompanied by the MANGHAN VOTING DATA DATASET. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Questionnaires were largely built on Likert Scales, although open-ended questions were also employed. Each questionnaire was built on the findings from preceding works, and reflected changing concerns over the course of the project. Therefore, questionnaires vary to a certain degree in each file. Participants completed the surveys independently. Their feedback was then digitised and securely stored. Methods for processing the data: Excel formulas were used to translate the data into percentages. Software- or Instrument-specific information needed to interpret the data, including software and hardware version numbers: Excel. -------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION -------------------------- 1MANGHAN_SURVEYDATA_CROWDCOMP Various Likert terms. Musicians - half of the work's participants were trained musicians, with a GCSE Music qualification or higher. Their feedback is recorded separately. Non-musicians - half of the work's participants were without musical training. Their feedback is recorded separately. Totals - the data from both groups are combined. Options - participants voted on the 'pitch' and 'note length' of successive new notes. Each category was polled with a list options to choose from. Pitch - the degree of highness or lowness of a tone. Note length - the relative duration of a note (also known as, 'note value'). Resources - participants were provided with audio and picture resources to assist comprehension when voting. 2MANGHAN_SURVEYDATA_HYPERCELLO(main study) Various Likert terms. Options - participants voted on successive polls, each presenting a list of options to choose from, that gradually produced a new, collectively determined work. 'Quick-fire nature' - polls closed following a 5 second timer. Cellist - a live instrumentalist was employed to perform the crowd-composed materials. 3MANGHAN_SURVEYDATA_IT WASNT ALL YELLOW(second study) Various Likert terms. Vote - the number of of responses each questionnaire option received. Options - participants voted on successive polls, each presenting a list of options to choose from, that gradually produced a new, collectively determined work. 'Technology and equipment' - relatively esoteric electronic equipment was used to facilitate the work. Musicians - the work employed a duo of musicians to perform the crowd-composed materials. Volunteer questionnaire - a small selection of participants were invited to individually contribute more complex materials. This group received an additional survey relating to volunteering in the work. 4MANGHAN_SURVEYDATA_ELECTROQUIZ(pilot) Various Likert terms. Vote - the number of of responses each questionnaire option received. Options - participants voted on successive polls, each presenting a list of options to choose from, that gradually produced a new, collectively determined work. 'Technology and equipment' - relatively esoteric electronic equipment was used to facilitate the work. 5MANGHAN_SURVEYDATA_ELECTROQUIZ(second study) Various Likert terms. Vote - the number of of responses each questionnaire option received. Options - participants voted on successive polls, each presenting a list of options to choose from, that gradually produced a new, collectively determined work. 'Technology and equipment' - relatively esoteric electronic equipment was used to facilitate the work. Elgar questionnaire - the work was performed to a large group of children across a range of ages, sourced from two youth music ensembles, 'Elgar' and 'Acorn'. Elgar were the older group, and received this questionnaire. Acorn questionnaire - Acorn were the youngest group and received this questionnaire, which was intended to be more appropriate for their demographic. Volunteer questionnaire - a small selection of participants were invited to individually contribute more complex materials. This group received an additional survey relating to volunteering in the work.
