README File for the Dataset for High resolution optical observations of neutral heating associated with the electrodynamics of an auroral arc Dataset DOI: 10.5258/SOTON/D1056 Readme Author: David Price, University of Southampton [ORCID ID: 0000-0003-0794-0874] This dataset supports the publication: AUTHORS: D. J. Price, D. K. Whiter, J. M. Chadney and B. S. Lanchester TITLE: High resolution optical observations of neutral heating associated with the electrodynamics of an auroral arc JOURNAL: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics This dataset contains: VIDEOS (ASK1.avi & ASK3.avi, ASK_fov.avi): The videos (ASK1.avi & ASK3.avi) show ASK1 and ASK3 data from the time interval during which the aurora is visible in the field of view (20:50:40 - 20:52:41 UT). The temporal resolution of the raw data is 31.25ms (32 Hz) and the videos are played at real time (32 Hz). The central wavelengths and filter widths of ASK1 and ASK3 can be found in Table 1 of the paper. The video ASK_fov.avi shows the ASK1 video, with the HiTIES integration slit overplotted in white, alongside the measured neutral temperature profiles for the time interval between 20:50:40 and 20:52:10 UT. --------------------------------------- SPECTRA (spectra.ascii): An ascii file containing half-second resolution emission spectra, taken by HiTIES during the event, is provided under the name 'spectra.ascii'. The time interval covered in this data is between 20:50:37 and 20:52:41 UT. --------------------------------------- KEOGRAMS (ASK1_keogram.ps & ASK3_keogram.ps): The keograms are created from a North-South directed slice through the centre of the ASK images that are then stacked in time. The two keograms correspond to the ASK1 channel (N2, 673nm) and ASK3 channel (OI, 777.4nm) respectively. They span the time interval between 20:50:40 and 20:52:41 UT. Date of data collection: All data was collected on the 27th of January 2017. Information about geographic location of data collection: Data was collected by the ASK and HiTIES instruments located on the island of Spitzbergen in the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway (78.15 N, 16.03 E). Date that the file was created: August, 2019 Email D.J.Price@soton.ac.uk for any further questions.
