Commuoversi con impegno.: Emozione e pensiero politico nel cinema italiano
This essay considers politically committed Italian cinema in the 21st century in relation to historical forms of radical cinema in Italy. It traces the relationship between thought and emotion and argues that radical critique needs to understand the importance of emotional engagement if it is to successfully instil political engagement in popular audiences. It considers the attempt to do so in Italian political cinema, and argues that an epochal transformation has occurred that renders contemporary political cinema largely detached and disinvolved in relation to emotional engagement and to the popular masses whose lives it seeks to improve. It argues that this is an aesthetic transformation which it regards in historical terms as a corollary of the defeat of the Italian left in its attempts to transform popular life.
