Generation of controlled optical spectra using phase modulation and suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering
Special phase modulation formats for broadening the narrow linewidth laser for suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and thereby boosting power in fibre amplifiers has been given much attention lately [1]. We experimentally generate optimized arbitrary periodic waveforms realized with arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) that can produce desirable optical spectra with sufficient accuracy when used for phase modulation. Nonlinear optimization is carried out on phase modulation waveform samples to minimize a cost function which results in optical spectra having nearly equal amplitude discrete spectral lines with most of the power concentrated in the targeted broadened bandwidth ideal for SBS suppression.
