Who is the author of my poems?: Art practice based PhD exploring knowledge gained in the process of creativity
It is a prevailingassumptionthat poetryis closelylinkedto the times in which it is created, and that the poet isinfluencedby his surroundings. For example, the EnglishRomanticpoetryis seen as a direct result of the French andAmericanrevolutions.(Ackroyd, 2006).However, this assumptiondoes not explainthe observationthat poetryis beingwrittenin ancienttimes as well as in moderntimes;in times of great wars as well as times of tranquillity;in crowdedcitiesor in remoteunpopulatedcountryside.Since poets have been writingwithinvariedhistoricaltimes, societiesand evencontradictorysituations,it could be argued that these factorsinfluenceand shape the contentof the poem, but do not bringabout the impetuousto create, as Ellrodt (2000:v) notes. Creativity, I wouldargue, is not ‘sparked’by any of the abovefactors, but ratherby a different mode of activitycomingfrom a mysterioussource of knowledgethat arguablycannotbeseen or measured, thus requires an exploration. In this paper I wouldlike to approach the source of creativityusing a re-flectiveaccount,in the hope to contributesome insightsregarding the work of an artist withinacademiccontext.I will focusonmyartisticoutputasavisionarypoet, exemplifiedthroughpoetryinvideoartsthatarecreatedaspartofmyPhDresearch. The paper will approach there elementin the poeticcreative process:Word, Writing, and Poet.
