The Poetry of John Tyndall
The Poetry of John Tyndall
The influence of science on such canonical nineteenth-century poets as Shelley and Tennyson has been much studied. This book explores the opposite case: the influence of poetry upon one of the foremost scientists of the age, the physicist John Tyndall (c.1822–93). The edition will be the first dedicated publication of the complete poetic works of a Victorian scientist. An extended interdisciplinary essay introduces the full range of this poetry, most of it previously unpublished, discussing what it reveals about Tyndall, and the ways in which he used poetry and poetic language to communicate his science and his wider metaphysical beliefs.
