Structural topology optimisation of a gas turbine engine and nacelle integration components employing A medial surface representation
This paper presents a novel structural topology optimisation of a whole engine Integrated Finite Element Model (IFEM) predominantly based on medial surface representation. The IFEM includes not only the engine core but also the engine integration components (EICs) including the inlet, fan cowl, pylon, TRU (thrust reverser unit), plug and nozzle. By widening the scope of the optimisation to the entire Engine-EIC assembly, it is demonstrated that a lower overall whole engine mass can be been achieved by exploiting novel load sharing opportunities. Through this more integrated approach to design and optimisation, EICs can facilitate more efficient load paths and contribute to system-level structural functions.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel structural topology optimisation of a whole engine Integrated Finite Element Model (IFEM) predominantly based on medial surface representation.
