The histochemical evaluation of proliferation in breast carcinomas labelled in vivo with bromodeoxyuridine

The histochemical evaluation of proliferation in breast carcinomas labelled in vivo with bromodeoxyuridine
The histochemical evaluation of proliferation in breast carcinomas labelled in vivo with bromodeoxyuridine

The bromodeoxyuridine derived labelling indices (LI) of invasive breast carcinomas were studied in histochemical sections. The mean histochemical total tumour labelling index was 5.8% ± 3.1% SD (range 0.9-15.8%). There was no significant difference between the mean histochemical LI values when stratified for tumour size and node status, but a trend was seen to increasing proliferation with higher tumour grades. Using flow cytometrically derived S phase duration data and histochemical labelling index data, the mean potential doubling time (Tpot) of the tumour cell compartment was calculated to be 6.6 ± 4.0 days (range 0.8-16.6 days). After adjustment to account for cell division following pulse labelling, histochemical labelling index data was compared with flow cytometric derived labelling index data. There was no correlation between pairs of data derived from individual tumours using the two techniques.
