Beyond the new public governance

Beyond the new public governance
Beyond the new public governance
I provide a brief history of the shift from traditional public administration to new public management to the new public governance. I identify three waves of new public governance - network governance, metagovernance, and decentred governance. This chapter describes the first two waves briefly before focusing on decentred governance. I argue for a bottom-up approach to the study of governance that focuses on local knowledge, and uses storytelling as its main method for collecting data. As every approach to the study of governance has its limits, the chapter concludes by discussing the usefulness of local knowledge to central policy makers.

Abstract

I provide a brief history of the shift from traditional public administration to new public management to the new public governance. I identify three waves of new public governance - network governance, metagovernance, and decentred governance. This chapter describes the first two waves briefly before focusing on decentred governance. I argue for a bottom-up approach to the study of governance that focuses on local knowledge, and uses storytelling as its main method for collecting data. As every approach to the study of governance has its limits, the chapter concludes by discussing the usefulness of local knowledge to central policy makers.
