Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to understand how the uses, practices and performances of speakers of different linguistic codes (at least 16 indigenous languages, Spanish and English) come together and negotiate their space in the city of Oaxaca; which as the political capital of the state with the same name in Mexico, becomes a contact zone. In 1991, Mary Louise Pratt introduced the concept of the ‘contact zone’ to frame the studies of social spaces where people cultural, political, social and economic separated collide and create ongoing relationships marked by unequal power. This concept has proved its effectiveness in colonialist and postcolonial studies.
Through the collection and analysis of biographical accounts, linguistic landscapes, articles in the media and field observations; it was possible to understand how the different linguistic codes gain their values under the lens of linguistic superdiversity (Blommaert and Rampton, 2011b), a frame that offers openness to different and varied expressions of the linguistic contact. The coexistence of a strong ideology of homogenization along a new one of diversity is the central part of the negotiation in this context. Inside this coexistence, there are sub-ideologies of hygiene (Cameron, 1995), standardization (Paffey, 2012) and territoriality (Heller, 2008) intersecting, naturalizing and normalizing the older ideologies by coercion and creation of imaginaries; in which the media and written forms appear to play a fundamental part. This thesis has been written in Spanish.
