Social entrepreneurship and sustainability in tourism and hospitality
Social entrepreneurship and sustainability in tourism and hospitality
This paper aims to advance the understanding of the dyadic relationship between social entrepreneurship and sustainability within the context of tourism and hospitality through a systematic review of the literature. While Social entrepreneurship (SE) is arguably a means for a more sustainable tourism and hospitality industry, scholarly works on it are inadequate. This is the first systematic literature review on studies linking social entrepreneurship with tourism and hospitality. Modified PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols) were adopted as a guideline to conduct a thorough systematic literature review. We analysed 51 articles on social entrepreneurship in the tourism and hospitality industry published between January 2000 and May 2018. This review reveals a shortage of studies on tourism and hospitality social enterprises which address sustainability in a holistic way and the impact of community inclusion. There has also been scant application in the articles reviewed of theories examining the impact of social entrepreneurship on communities. Furthermore, economic surplus recycling, the complexity of broader networks and resiliency strategies of social enterprises operating in tourism and hospitality were largely overlooked in the reviewed articles. We generate insights into practitioners’ understanding of the operationalisation of a social entrepreneurship model in order to improve sustainability initiatives in the tourism and hospitality industry. Key words: Tourism and Hospitality, Sustainable Development, Social Entrepreneurship, Systematic Literature Review
