More information

Published date: 3 January 2012
Additional Information: Funding Information: In July 2009 a conference was held at the ICMA Centre, University of Reading, linked to the formal launch of a website listing all soldiers known to have served the English crown between 1369 and 1453 ( ). This website was the result of a three-year project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council of the UK, and was based on administrative records of the English royal government. The associated conference aimed to bring together historians working on these records more generally, to show the huge potential of archival research in the field of fourteenth-century military history. Some of the papers at the conference focused on the experience of the individual soldier and have formed the basis of an edited book. 1 1 Others considered broader themes or specific campaigns. We are grateful to the editor of the Journal of Medieval History for accepting some of these for a special issue, and to the readers who provided advice and suggestions on earlier versions.
