Assembly Production Planning by Network Flow Approach

Assembly Production Planning by Network Flow Approach
Assembly Production Planning by Network Flow Approach
This paper models the production planning problem of multi-item, multi-stage assembly line with production and inventory constraints as a network flow optimisation problem with additional constraints. The performances of two algorithms for solving the resulting mathematical model are compared: the general purpose algorithm GAMS, and RETRA, a specific algorithm designed to solve this particular model. An application to the production planning problem of an actual spring factory suggests that the execution time of RETRA increases linearly with the number of items. This tendency demonstrates the advantage of having a dedicated algorithm to solve a specific problem

Abstract

This paper models the production planning problem of multi-item, multi-stage assembly line with production and inventory constraints as a network flow optimisation problem with additional constraints. The performances of two algorithms for solving the resulting mathematical model are compared: the general purpose algorithm GAMS, and RETRA, a specific algorithm designed to solve this particular model. An application to the production planning problem of an actual spring factory suggests that the execution time of RETRA increases linearly with the number of items. This tendency demonstrates the advantage of having a dedicated algorithm to solve a specific problem
