Archaeologial survey for the "Project for reconstruction and modernization of the fishing port Michurin", Tsarevo town
Archaeologial survey for the "Project for reconstruction and modernization of the fishing port Michurin", Tsarevo town
In July 2018, the Centre for Underwater Archaeology carried out a rescue preliminary archaeological survey in the bay of Tsarevo town. The work was done due to the planned enlargement of the port facilities (Fig. 1). A predictive model based of archival and modern topographic data was prepared. The model identified that the planned construction concerned an area with high potential for existence of an unknown submerged prehistoric settlement (Fig. 2). After that the following field studies were conducted: bathymetric survey, side scan survey and diving inspections of identified targets and priority areas (Fig. 3). No cultural heritage sites were found during the diving inspections. The study concluded that part of the northern side of the bay had accumulated modern sediment that covered the “historic” bottom. In case of future dredging works, an archaeological monitoring should be carried out to check the predictive model indicating a possible submerged prehistoric settlement.
