FlyZero: Innovation and Project Management
FlyZero used the process of developing concept aircraft to explore the technology, manufacturingcapability, skills and supply chains the UK needs to capitalise on the potential future zero-carbonaerospace market. It delivered technology roadmaps to form the basis of onward development.Sustainability was driven through the wider project to embed the thinking into the design, engineering, industrial and commercial evaluations of the overall programme. A detailedinvestigation was conducted into the how the market will develop over the coming decades andhow to introduce midsize, narrowbody and regional zero-carbon emission aircraft.FlyZero has presented its independent recommendations regarding research and development(R&D) that is essential for the UK to remain a leading player in the sector going forward. This notonly includes the development of the aircraft components but also the development of the UKenergy infrastructure in industry and at airports. There were significant challenges running a research project of this size in a remote workingenvironment. Project management techniques and communications strategies were employed toaddress this. The project had a rapid ramp up of resource from numerous contributing companiesand external sources, a robust onboarding process was introduced to build team culture and enableproductivity as soon as was possible.
