Beyond the Cesspit Beneath: The BBC and the Holocaust
Beyond the Cesspit Beneath: The BBC and the Holocaust
This chapter explores Britain’s relationship to the Holocaust through a discussion of the BBC, arguing that the latter’s attitude mirrors that of British memory more widely. In particular it discusses, I am a Jew (1940) and No Luggage, No Return (1943), two wartime radio drama features which depicted, respectively, Jewish life in Berlin in the wake of the November pogroms of 1938 and the Jewish death in Poland once persecution had turned to extermination. While the first looked at the effect on the victims, the second considered ‘the reaction of atrocity on the men who carry it out’.
