Moving an EAP programme online: lessons learnt from the practitioners.

Moving an EAP programme online: lessons learnt from the practitioners.
Moving an EAP programme online: lessons learnt from the practitioners.
The COVID-19 pandemic caught educators around the world by surprise, and since then we have learnt a lot about the challenges and opportunities of online language education. Before the pandemic, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pre-sessional programmes used to be exclusively delivered in-person using fairly traditional teaching methods, and all students had to travel to the UK to attend these. In 2020, however, such courses had to be quickly re-designed for students who were all around the world and for tutor delivery from around the UK. Most of these EAP practitioners were not familiar with online education and had to be fully supported online. In this presentation, I will discuss the case study of an EAP pre-sessional programme and look at these practitioners’ views of, attitudes towards, and experiences with teaching EAP online in this context, and how these have changed (or not) one year into the pandemic. Data were collected via online questionnaires in 2020 and 2021. The results reveal several technological, pedagogical, and social challenges, but also a change in attitudes towards teaching online from the EAP practitioners.
