Calculation of rare B decays in lattice QCD

Calculation of rare B decays in lattice QCD
Calculation of rare B decays in lattice QCD

This thesis describes the calculation of the leading-order matrix elements for the decay BK^*γ in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD on a 243 x 48 lattice at β= 6.2, using an O(a)-improved fermion action. Extrapolation to physical quark masses allowed the on-shell form factor, T1(q2= 0), to be determined and found to be consistent (in the Standard Model) with the preliminary CLEO experimental branching ratio of BR(BK^*γ) = (4.5±1.5±0.9) x 10-5. Tests of Heavy Quark symmetry were investigated, by comparing with lattice calculations of other processes. The possible implications of future experimental measurements of BR(BK^*γ) at B-Factories are considered.
