Design and development studies, and instrumentation, for a cosmic gamma-ray telescope incorporating a spark chamber
Design and development studies, and instrumentation, for a cosmic gamma-ray telescope incorporating a spark chamber
Cosmic V-ray production processes are briefly considered, together with the relevance to astronomy and cosmology of experimental cosmic y - r ay studies. Three broad energy ranges present themselves for study:- from 0.1 Mev to 50 Mev, 30 Mev to 11 11 10 ev, and above 10 ev. The detection of cosmic y-rays in the central energy range is discussed, within the experimental criteria that energy resolution is not sought, but that both the isotropicy fluz* and discrete sources, are to be observed. The choice of a satellite vehicle and a spark chamber y-ray telescope are critically discussed in the light of experimental techniques and results extant at the design stage of the experiment. It is concluded that a multiplate spark chamber the gaps of which are interleaved with conversion plates provides the optimum design. The theory of operation of a spark chamber is discussed, and applied to the design of a chamber suited to form the basis of a y-ray telescope aboard an OGO satellite.
