Hydraulics of flow over labyrinth weirs
Hydraulics of flow over labyrinth weirs
A review of the present state of knowledge related to the problems of labyrinth weirs and an experimental study of the flow in subcritical and supercritical conditions over labyrinth weirs having different slopes are presented in this thesis.A detailed examination of the following parameters affecting the flow and its variation along the weir has been carried out:1. The water surface profile.2. The spill discharge and its coefficient.,3. The average velocity of water inside the labyrinth wpir upstream cycle and the spill velocity passing over the weir.4. The spill, angle of the flow passing over the weirs. 5 The momentum coefficient.6. The secondary flow. In the subcritical flow condition. the results show that the spill discharge, weir coefficient, angle of spill over weir crest, momentum coefficient and' the secondary flow increase along the labyrinth weir. The average velocity of the, water remaining in the channel decreases and the longitudinal component of the velocity of the water flowing over the weir is usually considerably higher than the average velocity. In the supercritical flow condition, an incipient hydraulic jump occurs along the weir; or else the flow passes over the crest as a standing wave. A derived equation for the water surface profile along labyrinth weirs, based on the momentum principle, is discussed in detail. Some necessary relationships are deduced from the experimental observations. A computer program based on the water surface profile equation and the deduced empirical relations predicted water surface profiles in the labyrinth weirs which compared well with the observed ones.
